A denominação da actividade provém do facto de trabalharem com o pisão «máquina que pisa os tecidos».
Ainda hoje se pode encontrar no Barranco dos Pisões, um moinho de água, recentemente recuperado pela Junta de Freguesia de Monchique, que, posteriormente contribuiu para a base alimentar das pessoas que ali recorriam para moer os cereais.
